How I envy people who have a green thumb! , unfortunately I'm not one of them, and to top, this summer was so hot that all the plants in the balcony withered away.
Today's scene is something that I need in 1:1 scale. But no way, so I've done at 1:12 scale.

To make the terrazzo floor, I applied putty and on a thick watercolor paper. When it was dry I applied Alkil (plastic varnish) to prevent cracking, the talc powder is for working better

Behind the paper, a grid was drawn with the size of the tiles. I glued them on the floor, a MDF board, and I applied another generous layer of Alkil in order to waterproof the tiles edges. Them, I spread gesso with my finger and quickly cleaned with a wet cloth. to darken the boards and shine the tiles I applied wax with bitumen of Judea.

After the MDF panels have been assembled, I covered the walls with wooden slats.
In my opinion, it is always a good idea to integrate some architectural elements such as columns, beams, or in this case, a stairwell, because it has several advantages: firstly it enriches the composition by breaking the homogeneity of the wall creating different points of interest, besides, it brings a certain realism to the scene and also in this case is the perfect hideaway to save the battery and the switch light.

In the right corner I assembled a cabinet to put the laundry tub. It is made with foam board and covered with wood and a curtain in the door hole.
I also made a wooden framework for the desk and put the board.

The door is made of wood, and I added a knob.

If I had to make a concrete desk, I would do like the laundry tub. I would make the structure with foam board and cover with putty. Them, I would sand it softly with a nail sandpaper and steel wool.
I recommend painting with sponge in order to avoid brush-strokes, and make it more realistic. In this case I have used grey and black acrilic paint.

Following the same method I made also a jardiniere that has some flowers made from a silicone mold. I love the bluish green color, but it doesn't combine well with the color of the door so I painted in earthy colors.

The three lamps are made pretending holed cans. They and the other details are explained well with the pictures.

Y esta es mi escena
And this is my scene.

Espero que os guste :-)

I hope you like it :-)

Emociones fuertes- Strong feelings

For me, september is usually a month of contrast and strong feelings. Coming back to work means reconnet with colleagues and old sudents, meet new students, reorganize the classroom, search original ideas, start new projects, fill me with enthusiasm and desire for doing my work well and try to forget those bad moments that burn us out.

Muchas gracias Madelva.

This year, besides all these emotions that may look more or less routine, September has brought a couple of new things.
A great joy when Madelva Fernandez, director of the magazine “Miniaturas”, contacted me and encouraged me to work in her magazine. I never would have guessed how happy i feel seeing my work in this magazine. I feel
a terrible stage fright, but also pride,  joy, and gratitude . Thank you Madelva.

Some of you have congratulated me, before this post. Even Mafalda200 motu proprio scanned the magazine to send me the article while the package of Madelva arrived. Thank you to everyone, really these things make life much better:-)

The other strong and full of contrast excitement of this month is that my Etsy shop is officially opened: Pequeneces by MaraGVerdugo
The last scene, “The Sweet Tooth” wich appears in the magazine Miniaturas of this month, is also up for sale, along with some of the scenes you have seen in the blog.
Given the format, the time it takes to make them, and the materials I use, the price is the same for all the scenes, but each one is an unique design that I will not repeat.

I hope you like it, but mostly I hope you continue reading the blog.
I have to go now, I have to prepare my backpack for tomorrow ;-)

Desafinados

I had a lot trimmings of wood accumulated and I did not know how to make the most of them.

I recognize that I've never had seen with close attention the district of favelas of Sao Paulo until I saw the wonderful proyect 'Lus Nas Vielas' of Boa Mistura. I recomend strongly their web page. You will love their work.

Influenced by the color and joy of the project of Boa Mistura, I started my new scene: a favela full of color, light and music.

I stained the wood, crackled or/and painted in different colors.

As usual, I've assembled the three MDF boards with dowels.

To make the floor I glued sand. After it was dried I shook the excess, and I applied gesso and paint using a sponge with yellow and brown .

I made a ramshackle window and put behind the acetate , stained newspapers.
After it was attached, I started from the botton to up, covering the walls with trimmings of wood. I also added a tiny hut in a corner with an opening in the roof in order to hide the battery.

I painted corrugated paper simulating rusty metal, and put those trimmings here and there, also in front of what would be a bar counter , attached to the hut, and on the roof to hide the hole.
I also added a smoke vent made with a straw and paper.
If you like the effect, It is painted with sponge following this tutorial

It only remained to make the details .
A small electric stove made of thick paper and foam board, made in a similar manner to the record player in my Retro Scene

A beer tap, made taking advantage of a broken handle, tin foil and a tiny plastic container of unknown origin.

Un cubo con una lata de cerveza.

A bucket with a can of beer.

Una silla soldando alambre.
A chair made welding wire.

At this point, I was stuck. I needed help to get an authentic brazilian atmosphere. So that I thought in Eliana, she is brazilian, she is a great miniaturist, and she is lovable.
She advised me on musical instruments, traditional drinks and discussed the meaning of the title of this scene.
Thank you Eliana for your patience and good advice.

The instruments were quite difficult, a test of infinite patience, but finally I managed to make something similar to a cavaquinho and a pandeiro.

It seems that the liquor brands that I have used, are quite old, that is the reason because they are much more rusty than the Guarana Antarctica ad.

A few cans of the popular Skol cooling in an ice bucket.

To make the garland of lights, I used silk balls from earrings and introduced into them micro LEDs.

Y esta es mi última escena.

And this is my last scene.

It seemed to me a good idea to title this scene with the name 'Desafinados'. Not only to pay homage to the wonderful song of Antonio Carlos Jobín and Newton Mendoça 'Desafinado' composed in response to those who thought the Bossa Nova was music made by musicians out of tune. But also the term ´ out of tune' means something that does not fit, something discordant such as people living apart from society, either because this hateful system reject them or by pure survival based on the insurrection and disobedience .

I hope I did not bore you with a post so long.

Beijinhos ;-)
