Vanitas

Una de las cosas más interesantes del proceso de crear miniaturas, es la documentación. Teniendo en cuenta, que nos podemos inspirar en casi cualquier cosa, es interesante cuando pretendemos reproducir un ambiente histórico, documentarnos para no cometer anacronismos.
A mi personalmente, me cuesta un trabajo enorme, intentar reproducir una escena con fidelidad, y siempre añado o quito elementos, que cambian la idea inicial hasta el punto de ser algo totalmente diferente.

One of the most interesting things in the process of creating miniatures is the documentation stage. Taking into account that we can be inspired by almost anything, it is interesting documenting ourselves not to commit anachronisms when we try to reproduce an historical environment.
For me, personally, it costs me a huge job, trying to reproduce a scene with fidelity, and I always need to add or remove elements, which change the initial idea to the point of being something totally different.

Este año, por motivos de trabajo, fui al Museo del Prado con alumnos españoles y Holandeses.
Íbamos a ver varios cuadros barrocos de modo que me preparé la visita estudiando a fondo los elementos que suelen aparecer en las Vanidades barrocas como flores, velas, copas, dinero, relojes...y que representan la insignificancia del saber, del poder, del placer y de la riqueza, ante la fugacidad y fragilidad de la vida (Vanitas vanitatis) . En estos cuadros, también se solía incorporar una calavera entre todos estos elementos o a veces aparecía ella sola, para recordarnos que todos moriremos (Memento mori).

This year, for work reasons, I went to the Prado Museum with Spanish and Dutch students.
We were going to see several Baroque paintings so that I prepared the visit by studying thoroughly the elements that usually appear in Baroque Vanities, like flowers, candles, glasses, money, clocks ... and that represent the insignificance of knowledge, power, pleasure and riches, facing the brevity and fragility of life (Vanitas vanitatis). In these pictures, a skull was usually incorporated among all these elements or sometimes she appeared alone, to remind us that we will all die (Memento mori).

Estos aforismos vienen a decir que los bienes banales como la belleza, la juventud, la fortuna... no tienen importancia, pues al final, todo eso desaparece y lo único que queda es la belleza interior y cómo es la persona.

These aphorisms express that banal goods like beauty, youth, fortune ... do not matter, because in the end, all of them will disappear and the only thing that will remain will be the inner beauty and how the person is.

Otro elemento interesante, relacionado con las Vanidades y recurrente en la literatura universal es la locución latina “Carpe Diem” que todos conocéis, y que nos invita a vivir cada instante de nuestras vidas como si fiera el último.

Another interesting element, related to the Vanities and recurrent in the universal literature is the Latin locution "Carpe Diem" that you all know, wich invites us to live every moment of our lives as if it were the last one.

Pues bien, toda esta información se estuvo cociendo a fuego lento en mi cabeza hasta que decidí realizar una escena infantil diferente a lo que la temática nos tiene acostumbrados (ya sabéis, mucho rosa o azul, volantes y lazos por todos lados y mil detalles cursis...). Ahora bien, ¿cómo podía hacer una escena infantil que tocara los aforismos Vanitas vanitatis, Memento mori y Carpe diem sin resultar macabra? Bueno...pues esto es lo que salió de toda esta mezcla de conceptos.

Well, all this information was slowly boiling in my head until I decided to create a children's scene but very different from what the theme invite to do in these cases (you know, lot of pink or blue colours, plenty of laces anywhere, bows, and thousand of corny details ...). Now, how could a children's scene that touched the aphorisms Vanitas vanitatis, Memento mori and Carpe diem be made without being macabre? Well ... this is what came out of all this mixture of concepts.

He usado una peana redonda para hacer la composición más dinámica. Es una pequeña tabla redonda de cocina de 17,5 cm de diámetro
Con herramientas de talla en madera, he realizado un hueco y he cubierto el suelo con tablas, dejando una tabla suelta sobre ese hueco. De este modo, he creado un escondrijo bajo la tarima donde guardar algún secreto.

I used a round stand to make the composition more dynamic. It is a small round kitchen table of 17.5 cm of diameter
With tools of carving wood, I made a hole and I covered the floor with boards, leaving a loose table on that hole. This is hiding place under the platform to hide some secrets.

Diseñé varias cunas de hierro sobre papel milimetrado y me decidí por una de ellas. Utilicé alambre galvanizado y lo soldé con estaño. Cuando estuvo hecha la estructura, añadí otros detalles secundarios con alambre más fino, y añadí un camafeo a la cabecera de la cuna.

I designed several iron cradles on a paper measured in millimeters.
I used galvanized wire and soldered to make one of them. When the structure was made, I added other minor details with thiner wire, and added a cameo to the head of the cradle.

Tras limpiar las soldaduras con agua y jabón, pinté la superficie con pintura para superficies de difícil adherencia.
Con un cortador en forma de flor y una herramienta de bruñido, fui haciendo unos adornos que pegué en algunas partes.
Pinté de marrón y cuando hubo secado usé diferentes tonos para darle aspecto oxidado y viejo.
Corté unas pequeñas tablas teñidas de color roble que pegué como si fueran el somier.
Hice un pequeño colchón con una tela de rallas y un cojín. El cojín de colores es Las miniaturas de Isa

After cleaning the welds with soap and water, I primed the surface with paint for difficult surfaces.
With a flower punch cutter and a burnishing tool, I made some ornaments.
I painted it brown and when it had dried I used different tones to give it rusty and old look.
I cut some small oak-stained boards that I glued like the mattress base.
I made a small mattress with a cloth of racks and a cushion. The colored cushion is from Las miniaturas de Isa

Para que la cuna destaque, era necesario poner algo detrás que la enmarcara, de modo que hice un biombo de madera. Lo teñí de color roble le pegué unos adornos de bisutería y lo pinté de blanco pero decapado a la cera.
He buscado un método más sencillo que las bisagras para unir los paneles de biombo que me permita, moverlos y componer la escena de varias formas.

To make the cradle stand out, it was necessary to put something behind it, so I made a wooden screen. I dyed it in oak color, I glued some pieces of jewelry and painted it white using wax in some areas.
I have sought a simpler method than the hinges to attach the screen panels to allow me, move them and compose the scene in several ways.

Con palos de polo he realizado una escalera de dos peldaños. Después la he pintado de rosa pálido y la he decorado inspirándome en los diseños de Peter Hunt.
Después, con una lija, he desgastado aquellas partes mas susceptibles de gastarse con el uso y los años.

With ice lolly sticks I made a two-step ladder. Then I painted it in pale pink and I decorated it as it were a Peter Hunt's designs.

Then, with a sandpaper, I have worn away those parts that are more likely to with the usage and passing of time

Con papel grueso para guach, tela y un trozo de cuero, he realizado una maleta. En el interior he puesto un oso de peluche, un dinosaurio de juguete, libros, una pajarita de papel, un reloj de bolsillo, un chupete... y otros detalles más que dan sentido a esta escena, la cual habla con dulzura y añoranza de la niñez y también de la fugacidad del tiempo y de la vida.

With thick paper for guach, cloth and a piece of leather, I have made a suitcase. Inside I put a teddy bear, a toy dinosaur, books, a paper bird, a pocket watch, a dummy ... and other details that give meaning to this scene, which speaks with sweetness and nostalgia about childhood and the transience of time and life.

Callejeando- Walking around the streets

Mi casa nueva, la de verdad, tiene las paredes algo vacías, de modo que he intentado algo nuevo para adornar una de esas paredes.
He realizado una escena triple de una calle con varios negocios, es semejante a un cuadro tridimensional, aunque divido en tres partes, las cuales funcionan juntas creando una única escena. Aunque también tienen sentido por separado.

My new house, the real one, has the walls somewhat empty, so I've tried something new to decorate one of those walls.
I have made a triple scene of a street with several businesses, it is similar to a three-dimensional picture, although divided into three parts, which work together creating a single scene. Although they also make sense separately.

He colocado las planchas de DMF juntas con la orientación correcta, y sobre ellas he dibujado los elementos siguiendo un boceto previo.

I have placed the DMF boards together with the correct orientation, and on them I have drawn the different elements following a previous sketch.

Superponiendo cartón pluma de 5 y 10 mm he creado los diferentes volúmenes de la fachada.

Overlaying foam boards of 5 and 10 mm I have created the different volumes of the facade.

He forrado con madera la fachada que estará en el centro de la composición y he creado un pequeño escaparate donde he puesto objetos antiguos (un mapa, un reloj, espejos, fotografías...)
También hice la puerta y le puse una cortina por detrás.

I have lined with wood the facade that will be in the center of the composition and I have created a small shopwindow full of old objects (a map, a clock, mirrors, photographs ...)
I also made the door and put a curtain behind.

Para hacer la pared de la izquierda, apliqué sobre un pliego de papel grueso, masilla plástica con una plantilla, y antes de retirarla, di unos toques con un estropajo de aluminio para dar rugosidad a la superficie. Cuando hubo secado le di Alkil para que no se desmenuzara.
Pegué el pliego de papel con los ladrillos, y pinté de distintos rojos con una esponja. Al secar, usé masilla de carpintero (que lleva serrín) para manchar la pared por algunas zonas.

To make the wall on the left, I applied on a sheet of thick paper, plastic putty with a stencil of bricks, and before removing it, I touched the surface with an aluminum scourer to get rugosity. When it had dried I painted with acrilic varnish to not to crumble.
I glued the sheet of paper with the bricks, and painted with different hues of red and a sponge. When the surface dried, I used carpenter's putty (which carries sawdust) to stain the wall in some areas.

En el panel superior, donde va la ventana, usé corcho adhesivo para simular las piedras y apliqué gesso. Cubrí el resto de la pared con masilla plástica, y cuando hubo secado pinté con una esponja y acrílicos. Como el color quedó un poco fuerte, blanqueé después con acrílico muy diluido y en algunas zonas volví a dar masilla para crear manchas blancas.

In the panel over, there ir a window, I used adhesive cork to simulate the stones and applied gesso. I covered the rest of the wall with plastic putty, and when it had dried I painted with a sponge and acrylics. As the color became a bit strong, I bleached with very diluted white acrylic and in some areas I put putty again.

Hice la ventana de madera y tapé los cristales con periódicos viejos. le puse un alfeizar de madera y las viejas mallorquinas.

I made the wooden window and covered the glass with old newspapers. I put a wooden sill and the old shutters.

Para hacer las bisagras utilicé unos elementos metálicos de bisutería que son bastante rígidos.
En estas imágenes se puede distinguir el proceso para hacer las bisagras. Las pinté como si estuvieran oxidadas.
Para evitar accidentes, no fijé las mallorquinas hasta que tuve enmarcada la escena.

In the image you can distinguish the process to make the hinges. I used metallic elements of jewelry that are quite rigid.
I painted them as if they were oiled. To avoid accidents, I did not set the Majorcan until I had framed the scene.

Con cartón pluma y unos perfiles de madera diseñé el trocito que se ve de las tiendas de la derecha y de la izquierda.

Para hacer el cierre metálico de la tienda, usé un cartón corrugado pintado de plateado y envejecido después con acrílicos. Como queda al borde del panel, para que no se deformen los pliegues, le he introducido trozos de alambre en el interior.

With foam boards and some wooden strips I made the shop facades of the right and of the left.
To make the metal gate of the store, I used a corrugated cardboard painted in silver and then aged with acrylics. As it is on the edge of the panel, I have inserted pieces of wire inside to avoid deformation.

La pared de la derecha también está hecha con masilla plástica aplicada con espátula.
Con papel de calco dibujé sobre ella un anuncio antiguo y lo pinte cuidadosamente con acrílicos. Cuando estaba bien seco, lijé hasta conseguir el efecto deseado.
Después di Alkil y apliqué polvos de talco cuando secó para evitar brillos poco realistas.

The wall on the right is also made with plastic putty applied with a spatula.
With tracing paper I drew an old advertisement and I carefully painted with acrylics. When it was dry, I sanded until I got the desired effect.
Then I painted with acrylic varnish and applied talcum powder when it dried to avoid no realistic shining.

Para envejecer todas las superficies, tanto paredes como fachadas de madera, he aplicado cera con algo de betún de Judea y sombras de ojos.

To age all surfaces, I have applied wax with some Judea bitumen and eye shadows.

Los adornos de la parte de arriba de la tienda roja están hechos soldando alambre, y los he oxidado con productos específicos para oxidar.
Puse un aplique de bisutería en la puerta para adornar. El tirador es un elemento que se pone para sujetar las alfombras en las escaleras, además he hecho una llave para de agua bruñendo estaño, y un respiradero bajo el escaparate.

The ornaments on the top of the red shop are made by welding wire, and I have oxidized them with specific products.
I put a jewelry applique on the door to decorate. The handle is an element used to fasten the carpets in the stairs, in addition I made a key for water burnishing tin, and a ventilation hole under the shop window.

After framing the pictures I have put the floor in the main scene, and I have placed some details such as the rusty pipe (a rigid tube of plastic curved with the flame of a lighter); A topiary made with a ball of cork and moss; the numbers of buildings (with paper paste and some molds); the angels on either side of the red facade; A nest hidden behind the ramshackle shutter; A climbing plant with white flowers; some posters on the walls...
