In Fine Arts, color is one of the hardest things to use, and although it is necessary to study the theory, experience is what will provide us a real learning.

But of course, a miniature scene takes much time and work, it scares us to do experiments, and the fact of applying color on our creations seems to us overwhelming. I suppose it is inevitable to think: Does this color combine well with this other? What if I mess it up?, is it inelegant to combine so many colors?, or is it better to use only a couple of them?, Should I use highly contrasting colors or the same color range?...The truth is that you need to have a lot of intuition, experience and aesthetic sense for a successful improvisation work.

I wanted with this post, to make a selection of websites that I consider particularly useful for our purposes because they have practical resources about the color theme,

In the site "Design Seeds"  you can use a simple tool to create a color (for example the color we want to dominate the scene) by using the RGB variables. Next the program looks for photographs that include that color in their palette and it shows us how to combine with other colors.

In the site "Pinegate Road", in the category of  "Color Studies" you can explore through lots of photographs, varied palettes. You will see that there are striking combinations. If you like any, apply it as faithfully as possible.

The same approach, in the site  “Sara Hearts”

Use this tool, "Color Palette Generator" , if what you whant is to discover a palette in a photograph. Because the reverse process will be useful too, for example if what you seek is homogeneity in your work, or just you have the curiosity to see the used color palette; or if there is something wrong in your scene, you can find out if the color is the reason.

Finally, I invite you to know the color theory, because this will be very useful. If you want, you can see the presentations I put to my students where I explain the nature of light and pigments. (Sorry but they are only in spanish)
If you do not want to read all the theory, at least, take into account these concepts. First, the light color you see on your monitor, that are the result of mixing red, green and blue (RGB light colors) and the second concept are the pigment colors, that are the result of mixing the pigments cyan, magent, yellow and black. (CMYK pigment colors)

Also the qualities of each color are something important, for instance, where is the difference betwing different green colors? Well, primarily in saturation (the purity of color) and luminosity.
If we mix much a color with others, it loses its purity but a huge range of hues apears (bluish green, yellowish green, army green …), this is the saturation. The luminosity of a colors is the amount of light (you have to add white pigment) and darkness (add black).

Anyway ... I know these theorethical posts are more boring, but I could not resist to write about this theme, because color is a valuable tool to improve our miniatures,.
Thank you for your time, especially if you have managed to read the whole article.
You have my admiration ;-)
Hugs

I have recently read "Alice's Adventures in Wonderlandand" and " Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice Found There", an edition of the books of Lewis Carrol, full of logical and linguistic explanations of Manuel Garrido, translated by Ramón Buckley. Sometimes a bit arduous and difficult, but always very interesting.

While I was reading the book, the image of a second hand bookshop was being forged in my mind, and I started working on this new scene wich is called "Alice's books"

To make this scene, first I made the form of the store with foam board, and then I covered it with balsa wood, I also added some punched flowers like ornaments, and wire aluminum railings.

I decided to add a window in a rounded corner in order to improve the façade. I used balsa wood of 2 millimeters thick, I wet it on both sides and tied to a cylindrical tin to let it dry keeping that form.

Then, I cut the window space and placed inside curved structures with foam board to give it firmness.

For the underneath, I used a couple of charms of Alice in Wonderland, one flat and the other gently curved.

I painted all red again and when it dried I sanded some areas and applied wax and eye shadows to make patinas.
With golden wax I enhance the edges.

To make the stone wall on the left, I cut with the fingers irregular pieces of egg carton, I glued on the wall and added putty with my fingers.

Then, I painted it with a sponge and added Alkil (transparent plastic varnish) to protect the surface and talcum powder to remove the shine.

For the floor I cut some large cardboard rectangles and placed them slightly apart. I covered with a couple of coats of gesso, acrylic black paint, Alkil and again talcum powder.

This is the resulting effect.

The wall of the front of the store has outside bricks, and inside, a photograph with interesting colors to combine each other , this photograph gives also more interest to the composition than if we paint a solid color.

The shop sign, is drawn with transfer lettering and a golden marker.

I made a lattice for the big shop window to place two small shelves made with popsicle sticks where stuck some books. I finished installing the window.

I placed the lights, two hidden inside the shop and one outside. This one is realized with a carousel little charm, in which I placed a transparent acetate painted with stained glass paintings.

To make the small roof where the switch is hidden I did the structure with thick watercolor paper. And I glued the tiles. These are made of plastic putty on cardboard, painted black and gray.
I painted again the areas of the roof in white, and I applied two generous layer of Alkil and talcum powder.

I finished adding up the outer details: a special planter...

...an old suitcase with used books inside on a wood chair

...un cartel indicador...
...a sign...

...a dog staring at the door and waiting anxiusly to its owner...

Y este es el resultado.

And this is the result.
